The Art Of Using Resin Colour
Adding colour into your resin creations is a great way to make them stand out. If you’re looking to add a bit of colour to your resin creations then there are several options available. Just Resin always loves seeing creative and colourful resin art, and this is why we have created a wonderful collection of pigments, inks, and powders. Let's explore resin colour and the different methods used to achieve it.
Common Methods to Colour Resin
The most common resin colour method is the use of powders, inks and pigments, which can be mixed directly into resin for an even finish. These pigments are available in a wide range of colours, making it easy to achieve the desired resin colour shade.
Mica Powder is a popular choice for colouring resin. It's a beautiful and subtle effect that gives your resin piece an iridescent quality. You can mix mica powder with clear resin, liquid pigment or acrylic paint to create unique colours and textures. To use mica powders, simply stir the desired colour into the mixed resin before it sets. Be sure to wear protective gloves when working with this material.
Resin Inks are another great option for adding colour to your projects. These resin inks come in a variety of colours and opacity which you can mix together to create even more unique effects. Simply pour or draw directly onto the surface of your project and pour clear epoxy overtop once dry or incorporate into layers of coloured resins as you would any other pigment or dye product.
Acrylic Paints provide an exciting alternative for those looking to add vibrant colour and hues to their artwork without resorting to dyes or pigments found in traditional media such as oil paints or watercolours. Acrylics allow much greater flexibility than these traditional mediums by providing endless combinations of reactive colours based on what type of product is used along with them (elements like gel mediums or additives). The vibrant shades and textures that can be achieved with acrylics make them the perfect choice for those looking to create dramatic works of art. No matter what type of project you are working on, there is sure to be a perfect choice from the vast range of mediums available.
Pigment Paste is a popular choice for colouring resin as it comes in a variety of colours and can be easily mixed to create custom shades. It is a concentrated form of colour that can be added to resin in small amounts, making it cost-effective and long-lasting. Additionally, pigment paste does not alter the properties or performance of the resin, ensuring that the final product remains strong and durable. One of the main benefits of using pigment paste for colouring resin is its versatility. It can be used with various types of resins such as epoxy, polyester, and polyurethane. This makes it an ideal choice for a wide range of projects including art pieces, jewelry making, and DIY crafts.
If it’s a combination of inks and paints or a unique textural effect from epoxies and resins, you can find the right option for your needs. With such an expansive selection to choose from, there's no limit to how creative you can get with your artwork.
Is Epoxy Resin Coloured?
It is important to note that all of our epoxy resin kits are clear resin, a colourless material unless you add pigment in order to make coloured epoxy resin. Just Resin epoxy resins may be tinted in several different ways, with a wide selection of resin colourants available. This list isn't exhaustive, and there may be other additives that you can use to colour your resin creations; some of these may require experimentation to determine whether or not they work, how they turn out, and whether or not they can be manipulated to create different patterns in your projects. Taking risks is part of the excitement of being creative, so go wild with colour!
For an even greater range of colour possibilities, we can add mica powder or liquid dyes to our epoxy resin and we explore this below, so read on. These colourants are made to be added directly into resin for a variety of applications. They allow you to get creative and make designs that add more dimension and interest to your projects. If you’re making something small or large, the result can look amazing when you use colours correctly.
An important rule to remember when adding colours to epoxy resin is to add no more than 10% of a colourant to the total volume of the Just Resin mix. This means that if your resin and hardener mixture is 150 ml, you should add no more than 15 ml of colour at most. The best results are made by building up to the desired colour by adding smaller ratios to begin with. Likely, you'll only need less than 10% colourant because most colours that work with the Just Resin clear epoxy resin kit provide rich hues with only a small amount of colourant.
Let’s take a closer look at the most common resin colour methods used by artists and how to create them. A close look at mica powders, resin inks, acrylic and objects in inspiring ways.
Mica Powder Pigments
Mica powders are one of the simplest colourants in epoxy resin projects, making them ideal for novices. Mica powders can be used to create a variety of effects, ranging from subtle shimmers to brightly coloured glitters. This resin colour powder is easy and fun to use, and the possibilities are endless. The various shades of mica powder offer a range of colours and textures for any project. You can also mix different colours together to get unique looks.
Mica powders are generally in colour palette packs for different colour themes, ensuring that you always have a good selection. At Just Resin each resin colour powder packet contains 50ml of colour, yet some vibrant hues will go a long way. Keep in mind that the 10% rule doesn't apply when adding to mixed epoxy resin, when using Mica Powders. Mica Powders can be used in all sorts of resin projects. As well as producing stunning colour effects, it's also a great tool to use for marbling and creating unique patterns. Mixed with epoxy resin, Mica Powder will stay suspended within the product without clumping or sinking to the bottom over time. Some popular uses include jewellery making, table tops, artwork and more!
You can add Mica Powders to your resin right from the beginning of the process, or you can brush it on after your resin has already cured and then flood coat . Since there are no solvents present in Mica Powders, they won't affect the curing time of your epoxy resin. If you decide to use them during the mixing phase, be sure not to overmix as this could lead to air bubbles forming and getting trapped in your piece. Just a quick stir should do it! Pigment Powder may be easily incorporated into the resin by adding it to the mixture, followed by additional stirring for one minute. At this point, you will have coloured resin ready to be poured into resin moulds. Once your moulds are filled, the resin should be left to cure for 24 hours. After this time has elapsed, the cured pieces can be removed from their moulds and will have a vibrant colour due to the Mica Powder that was used in its creation. The pieces can then be further sanded and/or polished depending on the desired outcome. Mica Powder is also useful as an additive for use in paint applications such as acrylic paints or watercolour paints. When added to either of these mediums it can create a sparkle effect which is perfect if you are looking to add some interesting texture and highlights into your artwork piece. Additionally, it is possible to combine different colours of Mica Powder within one painting which creates beautiful results when done correctly!
A useful piece of advice to remember if you are incorporating colourants into a combination is to first combine the resin and the hardener in a clear state before adding the colourant. By following this procedure, you will be able to determine whether or not the mixture is suitable for usage since streaks will be visible up to that point. keep in mind that the amount of colourant to use should be proportional to the final volume and weight of the resin. Too little or too much can affect the quality of your project. It is also important not to mix more than you need for a single application as uncured resins tend to cure quickly when left in large volume. Thus, it is wise practice to measure out only what you will immediately need before starting with any project.
Therefore, you can add the Mica Powder to your resin mixing pot, combine many separate pots if you want to utilise a variety of colours, or use a paint brush to paint the Mica Powder onto the resin mould you choose. This may leave a fairly subtle colouring impact on your products, and it is fantastic for things like creating shimmery effects on your jewellery or figurines. It is important to keep in mind that Mica Powder will only colour the outer surface of your resin product when brushed into moulds, so if you're looking for a more vivid effect then you'll have to mix into the clear mixed resin and hardener or pigments or dyes can be used. Additionally, it's best to add the powder slowly and mix thoroughly as this can help you avoid getting any clumps in your mixture.
Mica Powders are incredibly versatile and can be used as an art medium for projects such as jewellery, sculptures, paintings, and more. You can use them to add colour to any project or simply to create interesting textures that will stand out from the crowd. With a bit of practice you'll find creating with Mica Powders is enjoyable and creative!
Acrylic Paints In Resin
Acrylic paints may be used with epoxy without major problems; however, doing so can lessen the glossiness of your resin project and, as a result, give your work a less glossy appearance or could give an amine blush effect. This effect will work incredibly well for some people, but for others who are going for more of a glass-like appearance in their work, it might not work. Additionally, while acrylic paints can be used with epoxy resin, they may not create the same type of bright and vivid colours that you might get from a professional grade pigment or dye. If you’re looking to achieve a particular colour scheme it’s important to select the right medium for your project. Acrylic paints are great for smaller projects but if you need a greater amount of vibrancy in your work, an alternate option is probably best.
Mix Alcohol Inks And Resin
Alcohol inks create unique and stunning works of art. They can be used to make unique patterns, colours, and textures that can bring a work of art to life. Alcohol inks are highly pigmented and have vivid colours which makes them perfect for creating abstracts or designs with intricate details. Epoxy resin is a compound that will harden/cure by an exothermic reaction, making it a great medium for preserving the vibrant hues of alcohol inks. Because resin art is waterproof and long-lasting, it’s especially popular among collectors who want inks in resin, something special they know will last a long time. With alcohol inks you can create art on almost any surface such as Yupo paper, ceramics, wood or glass but it also works well with resin because its colourfast qualities in the epoxy resin which allow artists to incorporate layers within their pieces without worrying about fading over time. This combination creates truly one-of-a-kind pieces that stand out from other artwork due to its vibrancy and durability.
If you have used alcohol inks and resin, avoid using a flame torch as it can damage your resin product. The combustible nature of alcohol means that attempting to eliminate bubbles with it may lead to fire. Instead, opt for a low heat heat gun or hair dryer to remove air bubbles. Additionally, ensure gentle mixing of the resin. It is important to work in a well-ventilated workspace and consider wearing a mask if you intend on utilising significant amounts of alcohol ink and resin in your project.
Resin Infused With Acrylic Ink
Adding acrylic ink in resin art is highly versatile and can be used to create a wide variety of effects. Acrylic inks are often used for painting images as well as for embedding objects into the resin. Acrylic ink is available in many different colours, allowing you to mix and match various shades for your resin art projects. They offer an easy way to add depth and texture to resin art pieces without the use of paints or pigments. Acrylic inks can easily be blended with other mediums such as glitters, powders, and mica flakes for unique effects. Many artists also find that acrylic inks provide better coverage than traditional paints when it comes to achieving bolder colour saturation. Unlike traditional paints, acrylic ink will not crack or flake off when exposed to heat or moisture once cured. Additionally, because of its fast drying time, there’s less chance that air bubbles will form during the curing process or that colour fading will occur due to exposure from sunlight or other light sources. When working with acrylic inks, artists must remember that they are heavier than traditional water-based paints so they should be added slowly and carefully mixed before applying them onto the project surface. Acrylic inks are also incredibly versatile and can be used for a variety of techniques such as airbrushing, drawing, stippling or creating abstract designs. They’re especially great for creating fine detailed work because their vibrant colours will stay true to the original image and won’t change over time like other media might. Acrylic inks are an extremely popular choice with professional artists who want to create bright and vivid colour palettes that stand out from traditional paint applications.
Colour Resin With Objects
Objects may also be added to colour your clear epoxy resin. You can embed things into resin, add glitter, glass shards, stones, toys, dried flowers, and even money to your designs to add a splash of colour. You can only know if something will look good if you give it a try, so let your imagination run wild and include various colourful materials and accents. Once you're done adding all your elements, you'll need to pour the clear epoxy resin over them. It's best to use a wide container to evenly spread the resin and avoid air bubbles. You can also add several layers of different colours and materials for more interesting patterns and textures. Once cured, your new creation should be sealed with an additional layer of clear epoxy resin for protection against scratches or other damage. The results will be worth it! It’s best practice to mix in objects evenly when pouring the resin as this will provide an even coverage throughout the casted object. Before curing it is also important to check for air bubbles which could be hiding under pieces or settled at the bottom or corners of a mould – use a spatula or toothpick if necessary! Once set and cured, you can enjoy your unique creation.
Using Pigment Paste To Colour Resin Art
Resin art has become a popular form of creative expression in recent years, with its unique ability to capture vibrant colours and create stunning effects. One technique that has gained popularity among resin artists is the use of pigment paste. Pigment paste is a highly concentrated form of colourant that can be mixed into resin to achieve intense and opaque hues. Unlike regular liquid dyes or acrylic paints, which can sometimes result in a cloudy or translucent finish, pigment pastes retain their vibrant colours even after curing. One of the major advantages of using pigment paste in resin art is its versatility. It can be used on its own as a solid colour or combined with other pigments to create beautiful marbling effects. The level of intensity can also be easily controlled by adjusting the amount of paste added. Another benefit is that it allows for more control over colour mixing. With traditional dyes, it can be challenging to achieve consistent shades and avoid muddying the colours. Pigment pastes offer more precision when blending different shades together, resulting in clean and crisp lines between each colour. The texture and consistency of pigment paste also make it ideal for creating three-dimensional effects in resin art. Artists have been able to create depth and dimension by layering multiple colours using different techniques such as swirls, drips, and wispy effects. The versatility of pigment pastes allows artists to experiment and push the boundaries of resin art, resulting in unique and stunning pieces that are truly one-of-a-kind.
