Creating resin wall art may seem daunting at first, but with practice and patience, anyone can achieve stunning results. As well as showing you how to use resin for art, we will show you our tips and tricks for making awesome resin wall art. Epoxy art resin is an incredibly beautiful product that can be used for so many different crafts for the home. We will show you how to create resin wall art, the different techniques you can use to create your own beautiful epoxy art, as well as unique resin art ideas.

Resin Wall Art Supplies

You may be a first-time user of epoxy resin or you may be a seasoned pro looking for art ideas. Here is a basic informational guide on how to use our art resin and resin kits. You'll need several items to prepare yourself for pouring resin wall art after receiving your resin art kit.

Your resin wall art project requires the following supplies, tools, and materials:

Now That You Have All Your Resin Wall Art Supplies Let’s Begin

Finding resin ideas can be challenging and confusing. It requires a lot of brainstorming, research, and trial and error. However, it can also be an exciting and rewarding experience. Exploring different techniques, materials, colours, and designs allows you to unleash your creativity and create unique resin pieces.

Here we look at a relatively simple way to make resin wall art.

Start by finding a flat even surface for all the resin art supplies, and lay down a Silicone Mat or drop sheet. If epoxy resin is wet, it will absorb into almost anything and dry hard; however, once cured, it simply peels off a Silicone Mat, making cleaning up a breeze. They really are a very handy reusable tool when working with art resin.

Place down small cups or stands to allow for the resin board or panel to sit on. We recommend four cups to be situated in a square pattern near the edges, without allowing any epoxy resin to come into contact with them. This will help with prolonging the life of the cups, so they can be reused over and over again.

Once you have placed the art board down, you can begin priming the board with gesso, spray paint or even your favourite-coloured paint.

Priming The Epoxy Resin Board

Why prime the resin board you might be asking? Most art boards are made up of MDF or Birch and will absorb the epoxy resin into the board, meaning you will use more resin. It’s also important to note that if you were to pour transparent or clear resin, you will see the raw art board beneath.

It is recommended to only prime the surface where you will be creating the resin board art (face and sides of the art board), although some people prefer to leave the sides raw too. If the resin board art will be installed in wet or humid conditions, you may need to prime all surfaces. A handy little trick is just before priming the art board or resin board, lightly spray some water or soapy water onto the surface and rub in by hand. This helps to stop any primer absorbing into the wood and to assist in giving a more even finish. Allow the primer to dry completely before pouring any art resin.

Using your spirit level, ensure the artboard is nice and level, this can be tricky at times, although it is a very important step to producing a beautiful piece of art. Your work will quite literally drip away if the artboard is not even.

It’s great to have a plan before you start mixing and pouring. This will help with colours to be mixed and amounts needed, please see our art resin calculator as this may help save some epoxy resin too.

Once you have your colours and a pattern in mind, place cups, mixing sticks and each colour onto the drop sheet or silicone mat. Use a Calibrated Mixing cup and make sure the cup is large enough for the total volume of Resin and Hardener. Always add the hardener first to the mixing container, and the reason for this is the hardener density is lower than the epoxy resin, so when adding the Resin to the Hardener, the resin will drop to the bottom of the mixing container and while that occurs the hardener will coat the resin and will help it not stick as much to the base and walls of the container, making mixing a lot easier. It is normal for the mixture to appear hazy when mixing, be sure to mix slowly and scrape the sides and bottom every 40 seconds or so. Continue mixing and scraping until the mixture is clear, uniform, and streak-free.

Begin Your Resin Board Pour

Now you can pour the clear mixed resin into the smaller mixing cups to await adding pigment. When using our Epoxy Pastes, Powders and inks make sure to mix the pastes and shake the inks before every use. Add a small amount and mix in until you achieve the desired colour and opacity.

Epoxy art can be created in a variety of ways, and one of the most popular is the wet two-layer method. With the wet two-layer, you can create a lot of depth in a single pouring session, and without having to wait for the first layer to cure before adding the second layer.

To achieve the wet two-layer method, you will need to pour a clear or a dark colour base first, making sure the coat is even and covering the complete surface. When using clear as your base, make sure when priming the board, it’s even and the right colour, as this will show in the end result. When priming the art board, it’s also a great time to draw or paint patterns that will add more to the depth of the final artwork.

Now you can add any other colours and patterns, the epoxy board can be tilted to move and blend the different colours, just be sure to return the epoxy board or panel to its original level position.

When using a heat gun to blend or move the different colours, we recommend to use a flat nozzle attachment and the setting to be at half heat, and medium to high fan speed. Keep the heat gun around 20cm away from the epoxy board, moving continuously, avoiding holding the heat gun in the same spot for more than a second to avoid scorching the art.

Glass image.jpg

You will find some lacing/cells or sea foam will automatically start forming on your ocean resin board, this can be enhanced with a blow torch or heat gun, the trick is to heat the desired area and allow it to cool down and repeat. Remember to keep the heat gun moving, and not to leave it in one place too long.

For this application, the heat gun setting should be set at full heat, with a medium fan speed. If using a butane torch, sweeping movements should be made around 10cm away, never stopping. This can be repeated several times, allowing the resin to cool between cycles for around 2-3 mins. Please note if this technique is overdone and repeated too many times on your ocean resin board, the lacing/cells or sea foam will fade/wash out.

Keeping in mind that if you have chosen to use Metallic Pigments, they are prone to spreading very quickly and consuming a large area. You can choose to use them sparingly or as accents, or of course simply let them run free.

Curing Your Resin Wall Art

Once you are happy with the epoxy wall art, it’s time to allow it to cure. If you have a lot of air movement from a fan or wind if working outside, we recommend to cover the epoxy wall art piece to stop any dust falling onto the wet resin. Alternatively, the resin wall art can be moved to an area where dust and air movement is at a minimum, ensuring the surface it is placed on is well covered with a silicone mat and or drop sheet, and the resin board is level.

Clean up the work area, including any tools and equipment and surfaces with baby wipes or alcohol wipes.Any left-over mixed resin can be left in the cups and popped out the next day, and resin left to cure on the silicone mat to easily peel away later on. Get creative and use your Resin leftovers in cool castings using our Silicone Moulds.

Hopefully you have found this information useful in creating beautiful resin boards and resin wall art.
